Ivan Pupo teaches modern and contemporary Italian literature at the University of Calabria. He mainly dealt with Sicilian literature, in particular with Pirandello and Sciascia, with nineteenth-twentieth-century theater, with the relationship between literature and psychoanalysis. Among his latest works, the following should be noted: the co-curation of Nel paese di Cunegonda. Leonardo Sciascia e la cultura di lingua tedesca (Olschki, 2019) and the monograph “Nessuno trionfa, tranne il caso”: le ultime novelle di Pirandello tra filologia e critica (Edizioni di Pagina, 2021). He is a member of the scientific committee of the following literary magazines: “Il castello di Elsinore”, “Todomodo” and “Pirandelliana”. He participates in the work of the National Edition of the Opera Omnia by the writer from Agrigento.

Abstract

The contribution focuses on the enigmatic expression «Dèmone dell’Esperimento» that the Father of the Sei Personaggi finds in his excuse. The literary matrices - Dostoevskij and Goethe - and the meta-theatrical value that Crémieux's translation highlights are investigated. It also analyzes the link between the Father and Marco Leuca, the protagonist of Pena di vivere così, the favorite short story of Pirandello, published for the first time in 1920, the year before the pièce.
